Dear John Clip Analysis

Institution linked (titles):
Screen gems, Relativity media and Temple hill

Target audience: 16-25 year old women

Genre: Drama/Romance

Main Characters: Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried.

First two minutes of the film opening:

The film opens with non-diegetic soft parellel music in the background, with a mid-shot of a man helping Channing Tatum. They are in army uniform and in the environment of a jungle with diegetic sound of guns shooting giving the theme of war. There is a diegetic voice over through the clip of Channing Tatum describing his feeling for someone which gives the impression this film could have the genre of a romance. Most of the camera time is on Channing Tatum which could suggest hes a protagonist. Channing Tatum then starts describing his life by referring back to coins using match on action and blurr to make the clip appear its a memory in his mind there is non-diegetic sound of coins dropping, as the camera cuts to a close up of a small boy and his facial expression almost as if that was Channing Tatum when he was a small child.

Created by Sophie Duncombe.
